Description

Colorless to straw-colored liquid with a sharp, sweet, irritating, chloroform-like odor. [insecticide] [Note: Exists as mixture of cis- & trans-isomers.] [NIOSH]

Used as a soil fumigant and in organic synthesis; [ACGIH] 1,3-Dichloropropene is a mixture of cis and trans isomers used as a nematocide to fumigate soil before planting; [Reference #1]

Comments

Liquid causes first degree burns on short exposure; [CHRIS] Rats exposed to concentrations above 2700 ppm develop severe lung, nasal, liver, and kidney injury. Prolonged exposure at 1000 ppm causes unconsciousness. [ACGIH] Allergic contact dermatitis reported in farmworkers; [Kanerva, p. 1780] Can cause lacrimation; [HSDB] A potent nephrotoxin in experimental animals; [Rosenstock, p. 576] Danger of skin sensitization; [MAK]

Restricted

Use as fumigant suspended by EPA due to toxicity. [Sullivan, p. 1053]
