Toxic by ingestion--may cause rhabdomyolysis, polyneuritis, liver injury, and kidney failure; 2,4-D esters are skin and eye irritants; Pure compounds and commercial mixtures of 2,4-D esters and salts have similar low acute and chronic mammalian toxicity; 2,4-D esters are hydrolyzed by plants and animals to the parent acid (2,4-D); 2,4-D esters are far more contaminated with polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins than the amine salts; [HSDB] See "2,4-D."
