leukocytosis

Description

Increased white blood cells; normal white blood cell count equals 4,500-10,000 per microliter; Patients with meningococcemia may have a normal WBC count, but increased bands and other immature WBCs referred to as a left shift. [Wilson, p. 68] Leucocytosis (neutrophilia) in acute fever: sepsis, abscess, amebiasis (usually), leptospirosis (usually), Still's disease, and lymphoma (uncommon); [Cohen, p. 685]
